Housing First
Everyone deserves a safe, secure home. Housing First puts housing first and provides the support people need to build stable lives.
House people first. Support them to thrive.
Housing First puts secure housing first, rather than requiring people experiencing homelessness to become “housing ready” before they can access a home. People are offered housing as soon as possible, with support based on their individual needs, choices and goals. Housing is not conditional on accepting treatment or other services.
UCAN for Health supports a Housing First approach for Aotearoa New Zealand — increasing access to secure, affordable housing while providing flexible, ongoing support for people who need it. Housing First recognises housing as a human right and supports choice, dignity, recovery, harm reduction and participation in the community.

Housing First Auckland
Everyone deserves a safe and secure place to call home.
Housing First Auckland provides permanent, secure housing and ongoing support for people experiencing homelessness. Its approach recognises that people do not need to be “housing ready” before they have a home. UCAN for Health supports Housing First Auckland as a good model for addressing homelessness in Aotearoa.

Electricity
Power is essential for health and wellbeing.
Electricity is not a luxury. People need affordable, reliable power to keep their homes warm, cook food and stay healthy. Rising electricity costs place increasing pressure on household budgets and can push families already struggling with the cost of living further into poverty. No one should have to choose between paying the power bill and putting food on the table.
UCAN for Health supports action to make electricity more affordable and to protect people experiencing financial hardship from unfair charges and disconnection. Access to essential electricity should not depend on how much money a person has.

Living Wage
People should be able to earn enough to meet their everyday needs and live with dignity and security. UCAN for Health supports the Living Wage and the work being done to improve incomes for workers and whānau.

Fairer Future

Low incomes, insecure work, high rents and rising living costs can have a direct impact on people’s health and wellbeing. When people do not have enough income to meet their basic needs, families and whānau can face greater stress, hardship and poverty.
UCAN for Health supports a fairer Aotearoa where everyone has a liveable income and the security to participate fully in their community. A healthier society is one where people have enough to live with dignity and build a good life.
